Why Gamify

why to gamifyI began trying to complete my first written assignment for the Gamification course, and I realized that I needed to revisit the reasons Professor Werbach gave for pursuing gamification. He identified 5 reasons:

  • An engagement gap: a need to get more people to connect with or use a product or service
  • Choices: an effort to provide more variety in engagement options (can drive further engagement)
  • Progression: a way to “level up” or see gains and improvement
  • Social: a way to connect with social graph / social networks. Gains in status and competition
  • Habit: making an action automatic rather than a conscious decision, with obvious benefits for increased use and consumption
